About the Principal

Mike Mateo Sena Elementary Principal Roy Herrera,

A Robertson High School Graduate, with 44 years of experience in education was selected as our new Elementary School Principal. He came out of retirement to give back to his hometown community and as an Alumni of the Las Vegas City Schools to utilize his experience to support the schools’ comeback from the COVID 19 set-back which greatly impacted students, staff and families. Mr. Herrera is excited to join and be a part of the Las Vegas City Schools with Sierra Vista and Mike “Mateo” Sena Elementary Schools as his new Principal assignment. He has worked with Public, Private, and Post-Secondary Schools in New Mexico and Washington State. He has taught College courses for New Mexico State University, College of he Southwest, and for University of Minnesota. In Washington State he was a Comprehensive High School Principal of 2000 students at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo, Washington near Seattle. In New Mexico he worked with the Carlsbad Schools (Middle and High School Teacher, Coach, High School Dean of Students and five-years as an Elementary Principal), Cobre Schools (High School Principal and Director of Human and Physical Resources), Socorro Schools (Superintendent), with his last New Mexico assignment as the Superintendent of the Santa Fe Indian School owned by the 19 Pueblo Governors for 9 years before he retired.

Mr. Herrera has a strong educational background with experience in supporting our elementary schools to continue forward in a positive manner. His focus for the schools is to strengthen educational opportunities and student outcomes within the school program.  He strongly believes all students can be successful and encourages teachers to challenge students with rigorous but meaningful instruction. He believes in helping develop students academically, socially and physically for success in life.” Parents, family, teachers, and support staff can make
a positive difference when working as a team. He looks forward to meeting our students, families and staff.

Mr. Herrera is originally from Las Vegas, New Mexico where he attended grade schools, middle school and graduated from Robertson High School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Special Education and Physical Education, his first Master’s Degree in School Administration, and a second Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) here in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Mr. Herrera is married to Anna Mae (Bustos) Herrera, his wife of 50 years who have 4 children, 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
